- The Rosko Show
- I'll Take You There/The 2nd Rosko Show
- The Rosko Road Show Vol. 3
- So Ya Wanna Hear Another
An early
champion of American Soul and R n’ B, Emperor Rosko (Mike Pasternak) was a good
friend of the Stax/Volt/Atlantic label.
He had compered for several European tours of artists such as Otis
Redding and Sam & Dave – it is his voice that you will hear introducing
Otis Redding on the LP Live In Europe.
In the early-to-mid 1970s, Rosko compiled four LPs of the familiar and the
downright rare for Atlantic, and introduced each track in his inimitable
fashion, complete with rhyming hep-talk and custom-made radio jingles. Each LP thus became a mini radio show; oddly enough
Rosko’s incessant DJ patter (making your back crack and liver quiver?) seemed
to stand up to repeated hearings.
The LPs were to the best of my knowledge only issued in the UK. In the 1990s a compilation CD of the four albums was issued on the Rhino label – minus Rosko’s introductions and jingles. The vinyl copies are now out-of-print and are becoming quite collectable.
Most
importantly, the fourth album in the series – So Ya Wanna Hear Another –
featured re-mixing by DJ/producer Tom Moulton, whose handiwork made the records
sound that much clearer, bass-heavy and urgent*. The first two tracks on this album
(Trammps/That’s Where The Happy People Go and Derrell Banks/Angel Baby) are enough
to pack any dancefloor.
*In the 1970s Tom Moulton also mixed the albums Disco Trek (Atlantic SD 18158) and Philadelphia Classics (Philadelphia PZG 34940). The latter has since been expanded into a magnificent 4-disc set on the Harmless label. The former remains out-or print (we’ll get around to it…) All of the albums present the music contained in a new light; enough to make the original versions somewhat redundant.
